The trail was open on the 3rd of August 2001. But after getting home, we heard through my dad who was there until the 9th that Black Bear had been closed due to mud slides. Was raining on the 3rd when we were up there, and apparently only worsened after we left.

North side (most difficult side) is open now..Trail completely open from
Jefferson on the south side, to Tiger Road on the north side.
Encountered just a couple of short spots with snow on the north side, but not a problem,
especially heading downslope...no problems with mud either in the usual areas though
heavy rains can always change that....
Great Camping, cool nights to mid 30's,though along stream, plan on pesky mesquitos for most of the day into early evening.

The Mosquito Pass was open all the way when I travelled on it on 8/3/01 in the direction from Leadville to Failplay. No snow acculmulation anywhere on the pass. The road appeared to be in pretty good condition all the way. I was travelling with a stock 4-Runner. Also, I also drove up to Argentine Pass from Wardorf on 8/5/01 and up to the top of Mt Bross on 8/8/01. Both trails were in good conditions and no snow acculmulation anywhere on both roads.
