The status of many popular high elevation 4x4 trails in Colorado is listed below and updated as the trails open or close. The list includes the main trails plus some 2wd access roads. The voluntary updates come from many sources, including the National Forest service, the BLM, and interested individuals. As the Colorado mountain weather can be highly unpredictable, please check with the relevant information body yourself for any recent changes. Conditions can change without notice. It is also subjective - a trail one person says is open, may be considered too dangerous to travel by another.

As a guide, you can view the dates and information from the 2018 season, 2017 season, 2017 season, 2016 season, 2015 season, 2014 season, 2013 season, 2012 season, 2011 season, 2010 season, 2009 season, 2008 season, 2007 season, 2006 season, 2005 Season, 2004 Season,2003 Season, the 2002 Season or the 2001 Season.

This list is intended as a guide only and no responsibility is taken for any incident arising from mis-information. The ultimate responsibility as to whether the trail is safe to travel, within the capabilities of yourself and your vehicle, or indeed open at all, is taken by YOU. If in doubt, DO NOT TRAVEL. The inclusion of any trail on this page does not mean it is open or legal to travel. Conditions change, and trail status may change, often without warning. Use common sense, and do not go around closure barriers. YOU have responsibility for your own actions and all of these trails should be considered TRAVEL AT YOUR OWN RISK AND RESPONSIBILITY.

Animas Forks Uncompahgre/Ouray 970-240-5300 Open 8/11/19
COMMENTS:
8/11/19 - Yes the trail is open from Silverton to Animas. The county dug a trail through the snow giving a 1 way pass. As you approach the slide you can see the other side and know if it's safe to proceed.
7/18/19 - Open but to get to Animas Forks you must go over Hurricane Pass and down California Gulch. The main road from Animas Forks to Silverton is still blocked by an avalanche. The trail is in good condition.
7/9/19 - Animas Forks is clear and beautiful. No snow at all. But, getting there is the problem. You have to come either from Silverton via Cement Creek or 550 via Corkscrew (which is now open all the way).
5/16/19 - It is important to note that this was a historic year of snowfall. San Juan county has discovered the valley to Animas Forks is FILLED with snow, up to 100' deep. And this is the access road for the Alpine Loop Essentially. Nothing is open for Memorial Day Weekend, and all trails are in doubt until Late July or August. Just don't want a lot of disappointed folks driving up there. San Juan County plans to make a valiant attempt to cross Hurricane Pass with dozers to bi-pass the area below Animas Forks but they have no idea what they will face right now. The issue is not just snow fall, but record breaking Avalanche runs that buried and destroyed everything.
2/19/19 - Closed by snow.
Argentine Pass/Waldorf Mine
FR248
White River/Dillon 970-468-5400 Open 9/14/19
COMMENTS:
9/14/19 - Open all the way to the top of both Argentine Pass and McClellan Mountain. On the Argentine Pass leg (724.1), about a quarter mile above the Waldorf site, there is a spot with awkwardly spaced rocks that requires decent ground clearance, low range, and careful tire placement. Further up, on the last switchback, there is a another rocky spot where we needed to use the rear locker (on a short wheelbase vehicle, longer wheelbase would probably be fine w/o a locker). The rest is all easy. The McClellan Mountain leg (248.1) is also all easy, though it was a busy day on both trails, so there was a bit of a traffic jam on the top of McClelland Mountain. We even saw tour jeeps, didn't know that was a thing. Beautiful, clear day, amazing views.
7/20/19 - No, the trial is open past the mine, up to the following point: 39.625645, -105.774473. From there there is a small snow bank passable on a motorcycle and a large snow bank that is not melted yet (may not be passable until the middle of August).
7/9/19 - Trail is good up to the Santiago mine, heavy snow drifts covering the trail the rest of the way up. Trail is in good shape up to the mine, places where water is running over the trail but that keeps dust down.
6/1/19 - No, you can get about 1/3rd of the way to the mine before you hit deep snow I would say end of June would be worth taking another run at this to see how far you can get
Aspen Ridge (CR 175)/Bassam Park (CR 187) San Isabel 719-486-0749 Open 7/19/19

7/19/19 - Road is open all the way from Salida to 307. No mud. Great shape!
5/5/19 - Trail still has some snow and mud on the north aspects but is passable to Jeeps, UTV and Motorcycle with good tires.

9/28/19 - Open all the way around. Nice trail with spectacular fall Aspen foliage. Mostly moderate with a few challenging difficult spots, most of which have bypasses and/or easy lines. Kind of an underrated trail, maybe because people think it doesn't have sweeping vistas, but it actually does, you just have to get out of you vehicle and explore some of the side areas and camping spots. Lots of camping areas, but jeez, people, if you're going shooting, pick up your brass - I came home with bagfuls of the stuff!
6/15/19 - Open all the way, no snow. USFS website morning of 6/15 showed closed, talked to a lady at the office, she said they were opening gates the morning of 6/15 and it is open, we showed up at 1PM and gate was open.

7/23/19 - Yes the trail is open and well marked from North Empire to Bill Moore Lake. The road was totally open with no snow at all. The wild flowers are marginal, but the mosquitoes at the end of the trail are abundant....!!

COMMENTS:
10/8/19 - All clear all the way.
8/9/19 - We tried to run it in the normal direction, there's a big snow drift blocking the trail just before the summit.
8/6/19 - Normally on 8.3 it's time to run Black Bear in reverse. The trail is NOT open and I was advised by SOA Jeep Rentals that the trail would be open in the next couple of weeks. Given that the trail can close in early September, it's possible that they won't be able to get it open before snow starts early to mid September. The trail is not passable from the first falls just right where the steps are at. There is a ton of snow blocking the trail. I attemped to run the trail backwards as 8.3 is the designated date for running Black Bear in reverse, and hit the gate just at the Bridal Veil Falls gate on the switchback side (Telluride) of the Black Bear. First time in the last 7years that Black Bear has been closed this late in the season.
7/31/19 - We started the trail from Ouray, Hwy 550. We ran into a snow blockage at around 12,500' but the road looked clear beyond the blockage so we dug it out and went on. We got to within a hundred yards of the Pass Sign but the road was blocked there by a huge slide. Summary... no problem now getting up to about 12,750, a hundred yards short of the pass (awesome views). But no way to go further, and the shelf road around the mountain top is completely blocked as well.
7/19/19 - I have a permit for our group to run Black Bear Pass from the reverse direction on Aug. 4th. I contacted the San Miguel County Road department to see if that was possible. They said "The crews are still clearing Imogene and won't finish the San Miguel County side until later next week. They will then move the dozer to Black Bear Pass. San Juan County does not have their side open yet. Tom Hannahs, District Supervisor hiked up to where Ingram Falls crosses Black Bear. There has been extensive damage from Avalanche debris. The road is impassable and major repairs will be needed."
2/19/19 - Closed by snow.

FR175/176)
Pike/Fairplay 719-836-2031 Open 9/28/19
COMMENTS:
9/28/19 - Trail open and in good shape. There is a side road to the north off from the west side of Browns pass that goes to the top of the mountain range. This road just recently has been closed by the Forest Service by new signs and lots of dead trees dragged across road. This closure is two miles from the summit. Talked to Agent about it, and he said motorcycles were tearing up tundra. The loop from Breakneck and back over Browns is still open though.
7/13/19 - Open and dry all the way.
Browns Gulch Uncompahgre/Ouray 970-327-4835 Partially Open 7/18/19
COMMENTS:
7/18/19 - This trail has two openings off of Hwy 550. We attempted travel up both sides and encountered snow each way. Entering the trail on the south end (just north of Ophir Trail), you can get up to just about 12,000 ft before snow blocks the trail. Entering the trail from the northern entrance (across from Black Bear Trail), you will reach snow once again while in the trees still. The rest of the road is in great shape. Views are still amazing taking the southern entrance off of Hwy 550, as you can get above the treeline.

7/13/19 - The trail is open all the way to the rock formations at the end. A great trail. Much harder than when I last traveled it two years ago. On a scale of 1 to 5 I would rate it at a 3.5 A fun trail and a great rock formation at the end overlooking a great view. The weather over the last few years has taken this trail from what I remember it as a easy moderate to a moderate hard trail. Lots of rocks to climb over. Really fun.

8/5/19 - CINNAMON PASS (CR 30) IS CLOSED from the winter closure at the Sherman turnoff (below the shelf road) to the summit. There were multiple mud and rock slides along Cinnamon Pass road. Everyone is safe. This is to be expected with the heavy moisture and avalanches we received in late spring and the rains we are getting lately. Road and Bridge is working daily on fixing the road.

Thank you for your patience. Engineer Pass is open and Animas Forks and Silverton is accessible from there.
8/3/19 - Trail closed passed Grizzly Creek to top and also from top to Silverton. Several large rock slides occurred trapping people on the top. They were able to get most off, but vehicles remain. It will be closed for about a week.
8/3/19 - : Closed for season due to rock/mud slides.
7/16/19 - Open all the way from Lake City to Animas Forks.

COMMENTS:
8/17/19 - The snow drifts are now no problem. Trail is in good condition. There is one challenge at the switchback right after the mine but not an issue for anyone with experience. The flowers were beautiful but not quite as plentiful as some years. They got a late start due to the heavy snow this year.
8/9/19 - Open all the way. Both switchbacks above the mine were partially blocked by snow but passable.
8/1/19 - Open for about 3.5 Miles, until the big waterfall along the road. Might be able to go a few hundred feet further to the old mine with the rusty water tank. But beyond that, there is a large snowdrift. The road the rest of the way to the lake probably won't be open for at least a couple more weeks, maybe quite a bit longer. Trail is in good condition and fairly easy until waterfall.
2/19/19 - Closed by snow.

08/16/19 - The Coney Flats road will be closed on September 3, 2019 due to the Peaceful Valley and Camp Dick bridges getting replaced. The re-opening is unknown at this time. It should be late fall.

Also, the Cutoff down to the Middle St. Vrain is clear of snow and downed trees. Stay on the 4WD road. Fencing has been mended and added to maintain route control.

6/13/19 - The Chaffee County side is open to the top. It is a beautiful newly paved road, but gate is up at the top. Looking at being completely open by Aug 12. But no signs of paving yet on the Gunnison side and lots of snow.
5/30/19 - As of 5/30/19 the Gunnison County Commission has decided that Cottonwood Pass will remain closed until 8/12/19 at which time it may be opened with some traffic control. Continued closure is due to heavy winter and spring snows. Closed due to construction activity.
02/21/2019 - Cottonwood Pass will remain closed until June 21, 2019. During the rest of the summer, the public can expect up to 30 minute delays due to ongoing construction. The road is closed from the Denny Creek Trailhead parking lot (Chaffee County side) to the intersection of CR 209 and CR 742 (Gunnison County side). 7/5/19 - Coming from the Lake City side you can make it to within a half mile or so from the top. Trail is generally clear and in good condition coming up from Lake City. The county is working to get it clear at the top and is within a half mile of the pass.
6/21/19 - No. From the Ouray side, Hwy 550, you can get a few miles up the trail towards Poughkpsie Gulch until you reach a switchback that's blocked by snow. At the switchback on the Ouray side, we came to a fairly deep patch of snow that almost looked passable, but the thought of riding up on the crust for ten feet or so, then punching through kept us from trying to take it on. With some more warm weather, this should open up soon. Not sure how much farther you'll be able to access. The other end of the road along the Animas River is heavily blocked by avalanche debris after this winter's 500-year snowfall, and Isn't going to open up for a long time.

COMMENTS:
10/5/19 - Dry and exceptionally dusty. Very busy with ATVs, some of which seemed like they could use a refresher on trail etiquette :) Nice scenic connector over to 285 to avoid taking 70 home.
7/21/19 - Came in through the Jefferson side from 285 and made it all the way over to Breck. Descending into breck has some running water from snow melt, but we had no issues. It's steep and fun going down to Breck and probably much more fun going up. We had a tenth anniversary JKU Rubicon on 35s and a JKU on 37s. A little running water coming down the trail on the Breck side. Steep and loose towards the top. The trail was very busy.
7/15/19 - South Fork of Swan to top of Georgia Pass is open! Snow is melted North side. There are one or two patches of ice shelves in the shade and significant drainage washing out out trail; but our group of 4 dirt bikers made it up no problem. Saw several 4x4 trucks and jeeps that also made it up. Lifted jeeps started up Glacier Ridge until blocked by large drifts. Would not recommend it on larger motorcycles due to drainage and trail erosion.
7/12/19 - Look like a motorgrader took out the remaining snow drifts. High altitude campsites are full of mosquitoes and still quite wet as there is still quite a bit of snow left to melt.
7/12/19 - From start of trail on South side coming from Fairplay or Jefferson trail is open to the Continental Divide. You can take a short side trip towards the West, but you'll need to come back down. Plenty of room to turn around. From the CD towards the North (to Breckenridge) it is passible but SUPER SKETCHY. Unless you're an experienced driver I would turn around. Ice and Snow block the road. Side trail #10 Hill Closed. Ice and Snow on trail at approximately waypoint 2 or N 39* 29.72' W 105* 56.83. That's not exact but very close. This was coming from the South not from Breckenridge side at North. This was about midway through the trail (before South water crossings) whether coming from North or South.
7/6/19 - Open all the way to the top from the Jefferson side, but I did not attempt to go down into Breck. From what I've heard, there are still a few snow drifts across the road near the top of the Breck side. Conditions are perfect on the Jefferson side of the pass, if not already a little too dusty.
5/11/19 - Entering the trail at Jefferson on 285, 10k limit, heavy drifting, only snowmobile tracks past. 2wd with electric locking up until 9.5k 4lock solid axle, tires aired down to 15psi.10k max. We apparently have had more snow hit multiple times since my trip.

The road up to the turn off to trailhead for Daisy Pass/Peeler lakes is clear, but snow above that. When crossing back over river, I immediately bogged down in sand. Had to be winched out by jeep. The branch towards Fancy lake trail is completely covered in snow. The main trail is in great shape. Keep an eye open to the right side of your vehicle on the way up.There was a very large and destructive avalanche off of Mount Whitney. This slide was of historic nature.
6/22/19 - Broke trail to French Creek. This was the first time in 30 years the creek was completely covered by snow similar to mid winter. There was a historic size avalanche this winter that cut 2400 feet into an mature stand of sub alpine fir trees. This slide terminated just short of the trail below the French creek crossing. Very impressive if you followed this winters avalanche cycles. Progress beyond French Creek might take several more weeks. Stay on the trail if snow bashing.

7/28/19 - 314 road to crystal and Lead king basin open, upper road 315 closed.
7/16/19 - Forest road 315 up Lost Trail Creek is open and easy peasy in a jeep jk up to North Lost Trail Creek trailhead. That was my destination, so no info on further, although a couple of mountain bikers had an easy time wading across north fork of lost trail creek heading further east up the road. Daniel's Hill from Beaver Lake up to the crystal fork in the road is ok, but it sure has lost a ton of dirt in the last 40 years exposing lots of sharp rocks that used to be embedded in the roadway, kind of like the 314 road to Crystal.
7/9/19 - Lead King Basin loop is not open through, north side basin loop road has huge avalanche debris half way up (1 mile past creek crossing), south side loop (from crystal) open over the top and down mile until big fallen trees block route. its early in the basin, wild flowers not yet blooming but should fully in a week. Huge avalanche debris blocking north side lead king basin and may not open this year.
6/11/19 - I just talked to the people in Beaver Lake Lodge in Marble and she said the road to Crystal is open, but that's about as far as you can get. The Upper trail into the basin is still closed and the access just on the other side of Crystal is closed also.
5/25/19 - Lower road to Crystal closed by 3 Giant snow slides. It's amazing how large the areas are, it will take "alot" of work to get this road open this summer. 1st slide maybe 1/2 mile after Lizard lake. 2nd slide by falls and 3 slide 1/2 mile before the crystal Mill. Oh, that's not counting the 2 large boulders in the center of trail and 3 large trees crossing road in the undamaged areas. I heard the upper road is covered in deep snow which is normal for this time of year and also a large land slide has occurred and damaged the road.

8/31/19 - The trail is not open past a new sign that states "No Motorized Vehicles" past this point. The sign is about 1/2 mile before the old log cabin at the top of the saddle. Since the sign is on the trail below, you can neither go left to see the Clear Creek Reservoir view, nor to the right to the see the full valley view. As we pulled over and turned around to follow the new trail restrictions, a number of ATVs zoomed right by us, ignoring the new closure :-( Trail conditions to the closure point are fine - very dusty, very dry. Easy.
8/30/19 - Not open all the way. Forest Service has closed the upper parts of the trail (just before the abandoned cabin ruins on the ridge). You can drive past the mines up along the bowl to just below the high ridge line. Permanent signs in place: "End of Road" on one side of trail and "Administrative Road: Non-motorized Use Only". This means you can non longer continue up and across the bowl to the far end of the trail where you could overlook the entire valley up to Leadville and down to BV. When contacting Forest Service, they indicated that there had been trail damage earlier in the summer from vehicles running on the high tundra. This will be a permanent closure of the upper plateaus of Lost Canyon. Took photos of signs if you'd like documentation. GPS coordinates are: 39.0272222, -106.3627778.
7/8/19 - The trail is open past the mining claim and past the old log cabin. Trail condition is good until 1/2 mile past the old log cabin at GPS coordinates: 39.02.058N, 106.21.337W. The trail past that point is covered in places with snow drifts 2 to 3 feet deep.
5/23/19 - By the way, since the trail climbs to almost 12,000', it's still snow-packed at the top, although the bottom is clear. But you can't get to the best views and the mining ruins.

9/16/19 - Open all the way. Seemed extra rough.
8/10/19 - Trail is open all the way through. We traveled from the Leadville side to the Alma side and encountered no snow fields on the trail. The trail is in good condition. At least as good as it was last year.
8/10/19 - The trail is open all the way through. We started on the Leadville side and drove all the way through and crossed no snow fields. Trail conditions are pretty much the same as last year.
8/6/19 - Still a snowfield just below the summit on the Alma side, but its passable for some. Someone in a stock Jeep had to be towed free. Every lifted vehicle made it through. Many parts of the pass on both side are heavily rutted with large rocks. I cant imagine anyone without a lifted 4x4 making without damage.
8/3/19 - Traveled up from the Alma side today. Made it to just sort of the summit. Still blocked by snow just short of the summit. Best guess is a few days to a week of warm weather before it's passable. No evidence of tracks from anyone getting stuck.
7/27/19 - Trail is still blocked by snow about 200 meters just below the crest on the east side of the pass. Someone tried to drive though the snowfield, just below the east side of the pass, only made it about 30 ft. We heard it took two jeeps to pull the stuck vehicle out.
7/15/19 - Not open. Approached from Leadville west side. Trail open all the way to summit. East side blocked with multiple snow fields. Pics of snow fields here and here.
5/12/19 - Nope - trees down and snow. Downed trees, snow, muddy.

9/4/19 - Open all the way to the top of both Argentine Pass and McClellan Mountain.

Napoleon Pass Gunnison 970-641-0471 Partially Open 8/18/19
COMMENTS:
8/18/19 - At the top of the pass, the road splits in two for about 300 yds. The upper route is completely clear of snow and mud. The lower route has a patch of snow (1-2 ft deep, 15-20 ft of road) over it. You could probably drive over it because it looks like it is really packed down. The lower route has a small stream of water running down the middle of it but nothing big. The entire trail is mud-free. The north/Taylor park side has some significant erosion. All stream crossing depths are reasonable for a stock '99 Toyota 4Runner. It probably could have handled another 8-10" of stream depth.
8/11/19 - Open all the way from the Pitkin side only. Blocked by an impassable snowbank if coming up from the Tincup side. Open all the way from the Pitkin side only. Blocked by an impassable snowbank just below the summit if coming up from the Tincup side. The road forks coming down the north side of the pass right below the summit. The east fork (the official trail) is covered by snow for about 20 feet. It might be possible to get through that way, but it looked slippery and off-camber with a substantial chance of sliding sideways. That route looks like it might be clear in another week or two. The west fork (probably an unofficial by well-defined bypass) goes over the top of a large icy snowbank with a 3-5 foot drop over a cornice before going through a narrow gully and meeting back up with the main trail. Cutting further right reduces the steepness of the drop. By the looks of it, most people have been going through this way. We made it through with two Jeeps going over the snowbank on the west route, but I would not recommend it. The drop off the snowbank was super scary and screwing that up would result in a rollover.
8/11/19 - Passible from the Pitkin side. Blocked by snow from the Tincup side. Ran this on August 11 and it was passable from the Pitkin side but blocked by snow if coming up from the Tincup side. There is a large snow bank just below the summit on the north side of the pass that is possible to drive over coming down, but risky as it involves a 3-5 foot steep drop coming off the other side. That route then follows a bypass trail through a narrow gully back to the main trail. The main trail is still blocked by snow in an off-camber spot, but it looks like that might melt out in another couple weeks.
7/27/19 - Snow still blocking trail at top.
5/26/19 - Drifted closed on Pitkin side, accessible only by snowmobile. 5-8 foot drifts from Cumberland Pass road to top.

COMMENTS:
10/5/19 - Great fall color. No snow. Some early AM ice on the rocky spots.
8/26/19 - Travelled Perl Pass from Brush Creek and encountered two snow drifts across the trail before the pass. The lower covered 2/3 of the trail but passable in a Jeep Wrangler. The second drift was within about 1/8 of a mile from the summit and is impassable. Turning around is very tight and the alternative is backing a long distance to find a wide spot. Was able to turn around with the Wrangle, however, a four door Jeep or similar long wheel based vehicle would have difficulty.
8/22/19 - As of August 22, 2019, the forest service advises that the pass is open from the Crested Butte side only, but as other have already stated, it is not open all the way through to the Aspen side. Still would be a nice drive to the Summit and then back into CB.
8/10/19 - From the Aspen side, snow continues to block the road beginning near timberline. Current blockage is at 1.1 miles above the Pearl Pass road sign, at the intersection with Montezuma basin. It seems unlikely that Pearl Pass road will be accessible to 4 wheel drive vehicles before it begins snowing again.
6/15/19 - Pearl Pass won't open this year due to avalance damage. Article in the Aspen Times
5/24/19 - No, blocked at about mile 1. Avalanche debris blocks the road at the first river crossing. It will be cleared as the snow melts.

Poughkeepsie Gulch Uncompahgre/Ouray 970-240-5300 Closed 8/14/19
COMMENTS:
8/20/19 - Poughkeepsie Gulch is NOT open. It has been closed indefinitely by the NFS due to substantial damage to tundra and surrounding areas from people bypassing obstacles. Trail has been officially closed ALL of 2019. Locks on lower and upper gates have been cut multiple times. Local sheriff has game camera installed and will be ticketing and possibly impounding any vehicles observed on this trail. All info confirmed as of 8/19/2019 with NFS, San Juan County Sheriff and Silverton Chamber of Commerce.
8/14/19 - From the Ouray side there is avalanche debris about 1.5 or 2 miles in. All gates are open though. Where the debris is blocking the road some knuckleheads have taken it upon themselves to create a new route, but the ground there is swampy and all it did was tear up the land. So, unless you go in there with chainsaws and friends, save yourself the misery.

8/10/19 - We stopped at the second switchback above the first false summit because this particular switchback was quite dug out and it was quite rainy/wet, so our attempts at it were just damaging the road more. However, we walked to the top (about another mile), and there were no spots that were any worse, so it is still definitely no more than an moderate route. Beautiful views from the top, as always. Nothing like looking DOWN on Webster pass! Per signage and the 2019 MVUM, this route is designated as highway-legal vehicles only. 8/14/19 - Open all the way. We traveled east to west. Many of the obstacle bypasses on the west side are just as bad as the main trail. Water at Mirror Lake was about 2 feet deep, just hug the bank as has been said. The second water crossing at the lake was only about a foot deep. It took us 5 hours to run the trail, and that was without stopping to take photos except for the pass itself.
8/5/19 - Trail is open for four wheel We had three rigs go from Tincup to St. Elmo today. Mirror Lake is passable if you hug the bank, water is about two feet deep but very doable, just hug the bank.
8/2/19 - It's open all the way, but expect to drive through 24" of water. We did it in our Rzr's with no problems.
8/1/19 - Open all of the way on the east side from St. Elmo. Talked to another driver who reported that some people are making it around the submerged portions at Mirror Lake on the west side.
7/25/19 - The snow up top was nearly melted out (we witnessed some very bad behavior by people tearing up the tundra trying to get around the snow. Pretty distressing!!), HOWEVER Mirror Lake was super high and road around was fully submerged and likely to be for quite a while!!! Hopefully folks do not try to create any alternatives!!
7/21/19 - Passable from the east by motorcycle on a very thin strip of road next to the final snow-field (100 yards from the summit) with a significant drop-off. Not passable by four-wheeled vehicles. However, the road around the east side of Mirror Lake is submerged for long distances (40 yards at a time) at a depth of about three feet with a few submerged, downed trees across the road. From the east - Several four-wheelers have attempted to make a new road from the second-to-last switchback up the final bowl to the summit doing signficant damage to the tundra. This area is clearly closed. From the summit to Mirror Lake - Very wet with a lot of rock movement over the winter. Significant gullies have formed with the spring runoff. Road is snow-free.
7/19/19 - Impassible from the East. Snow is still deep on the East side near the summit. Hopefully, with the warm and sunny days, it will melt away in a couple weeks?
7/16/19 - Drove up from Tincup side; Deep water (much deeper than normal) at Mirror Lake prevents further passage.
7/6/19 - From St Elmo the trail is open to the second switchback above tree line. Too much snow to get over the pass. The avalanche is two miles up from St Elmo and what a sight !!
6/10/19 - Pass is closed from the start. Due to an Avalanche, almost three thousand feet long.
5/25/19 - There's a "Road Closed" sign just outside St. Elmo ghost town.... I believe it's a Chaffee County sign, with closure due to avalanche risk

8/3/19 - We last drove this trail about 4 years ago, and although the rocks have definitely moved around since then, I would rate the overall level difficulty about the same, medium, provided you take the bypasses. The hard lines extend into the difficult end of the scale. Camping along the route is only allowed in designated sites, which I don't remember in the past. There are only a few designated camp sites along the route, but they are nice ones. I also seem to recall that in previous years the private land owners had placed some misleading signs on the portion of the route that passes thru private land, but that's all clearly signed now.
7/21/19 - I Called the Forest service on Friday and the Ranger said it was open. I traveled all the way to the top with no issues. There are bypasses for all the technical stuff. However, we had one 10th Anniversary JKU Rubicon on 35s and one JKU on 37s, so of course we ran the technical lines. Dry and Busy.

7/20/19 - There is some major runoff damage, creek rerouted itself and caused trail damage. Forest service says it is going to repair of it. Town of Red Cliff is VERY concerned it will instead be shut down. They are searching for volunteers for an undetermined date to help repair the road and mitigate further damage.

Open for bikes 7/28/19
COMMENTS:
7/28/19 - Webster is open for motorcycles. Just enough room to squeak by on the upper shelf. Couldn't get anything wider than a bike through.
7/14/19 - Handcart Gulch is open all the way to the mine gate. There are avalanche debris fields on both sides of Handcart Gulch on the upper part of the road. Definitely interesting to look at, but the road itself is completely open and without damage all the way to the gate at the mining facility.
7/13/19 - There is still a snow cornice at the top of the pass (visible from the valley floor), but more importantly, there is an avalanche snow field blocking the road just past the first switchback. It is less than 100 ft long and only a few feet deep on the uphill side, so it will be melted out in a few weeks. If you plan on breaking thru, bring tools as there is some minor debris in it. Also, there is a gnarly hunk of metal sticking up out of the ground right where your downhill side tire needs to be, beware of that as well. I didn't have time to hike up beyond the first slide, so I don't know if there are any other blockages between this one and the snow cornice at the pass.
6/15/19 - Only got halfway to bottom of pass. Large avalanche still blocking road with snow and snapped off trees.

Wheeler Lake Pike/South Park 719-836-2031 Open 7/21/19
COMMENTS:
7/21/19 - Trail is open all the way. There is lots of water on the trail (pools and rivers), and a snowdrift about 2/3 of the way up that is passable for most 4x4's. Lots of standing water pools - 20+ overall. Most are 1-2' deep and easily passable. There are several spots where the river was running down the trail, including a spot near the top where the hiking trail splits off where the river was about 12" and running on the trail for about 50 yards.
7/21/19 - Lots of water as usual when snow is melting but no problems. Brush along much of trail will scratch even the most compact 4wd. Was extremely crowded but worth the drive. Beautiful as always and is one of our favorite trails and camping locations

COMMENTS:
5/18/19 - The trail is passable but a few snow spots will challenge even the most powerful Jeep. The best direction would be west to east do to a large snowfield on a slope so going down is much easier than up. One spot about a mile or so from Mine Rd, Alice, there are 2 humps in the road covered with deep snow. Our most powerful jeep had to winch over. Snow about 1 mile from Alice requires tow strap or winch. Snow field 1.5 miles going downhill from West to East. Dry mostly once you get below treeline
